What lies beneath that appealing exterior? For almost 40 years, Wilhelm Mundt has been devoting himself to his ‘Trashstones’ series. The base materials are inorganic waste and residues from his studio, which the sculptor binds together into a solid form, presses into amorphous lumps, coats with fibreglass and, in some cases, paints. Through a labour-intensive process, these are transformed into distinctive monolithic sculptures with a smooth, almost sensual surface.
Wilhelm Mundt himself likes to describe his sculptural ‘Trashstones’ as lumps that are formally reminiscent of boulders. This group forms the conceptual and formal anchor of his work, to which he refers in installations, photographic works, drawings and video works. In terms of content, Mundt explores the question of production and invention.
The exhibition ZUFLUSSREGELUNG brings together a focused selection of various works by the artist spanning several decades of his career. The sculptures, in particular, gently establish a relationship with the exhibition spaces and draw on their original function as studios and experimental spaces. Mundt works with the building and, at the same time, against it; with just a few works, he provokes a physical sense of presence and raises questions about human and artistic existence.
