Biography

William N. Copley, also known as CPLY (January 24, 1919 – May 7, 1996), was a distinctive American artist and collector associated with Surrealism, Pop art, and the Fluxus movement. Born in New York City, Copley’s artistic career began in the 1940s and evolved through various styles and mediums.

Copley’s artistic journey was marked by a playful and irreverent approach to art-making. He explored themes of sexuality, desire, and satire through his paintings, drawings, and prints, often incorporating elements of humor and wit. His works frequently depicted erotic and satirical narratives, employing bold colors and stylized imagery that bordered on the absurd and fantastical.

In the 1960s, Copley became a central figure in the burgeoning Pop art movement, gaining recognition for his witty and provocative pieces that challenged conventions. His art merged commercial aesthetics with a subversive edge, offering commentary on societal norms and cultural icons.

Beyond his artistic pursuits, Copley was an avid art collector and patron. He supported and promoted the works of fellow artists, contributing significantly to the art scene of his time.

William N. Copley’s legacy lies in his idiosyncratic artistic vision, which defied categorization and celebrated the unconventional. His contributions to the art world, both as an artist and a supporter of other creators, continue to intrigue and influence contemporary audiences, cementing his place as a maverick within the landscape of 20th-century art.
