Biography

Yayoi Kusama (*1929 in Japan) is a visionary and influential artist celebrated for her avant-garde and immersive artworks across various mediums, including painting, sculpture, installation, and performance art. Her artistic journey began in post-war Japan, and she soon became a pivotal figure in the New York avant-garde art scene during the 1960s.

Kusama’s artistic practice is distinguished by her exploration of repetitive patterns, vibrant colors, and the concept of infinity. Her most iconic works often feature polka dots, intricate patterns, and mirrored environments, inviting viewers into mesmerizing and hallucinatory experiences.

One of her most recognized series is the “Infinity Mirrored Rooms,” immersive installations where mirrors and lights create seemingly endless reflections, offering an intimate and surreal encounter with space and self. Her “obliteration rooms,” where visitors are encouraged to cover a space with colorful dots, further blur the boundaries between art and audience participation.

1929Born in Matsumoto City / Japan

1948–1949Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, studied nihonga (Japanese-style painting)
