Biography

Carl Andre, born in 1935, is a seminal figure in minimalist sculpture, renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to redefining the nature of art and its relationship with space. His work often involves elemental materials such as metal plates, bricks, and timber arranged in simple, geometric configurations that highlight the intrinsic qualities of the materials themselves.

Andre’s sculptures, often arranged directly on the ground, challenge traditional notions of sculpture by emphasizing the physical presence and spatial relationships of the materials. His work explores concepts of form, mass, and the viewer’s interaction with the artwork, inviting contemplation of the surrounding environment.

His insistence on the direct engagement with materials and space has had a lasting influence on contemporary sculpture, solidifying his place as a pioneering figure in the evolution of conceptual and minimalist art movements.

1935Born in Quincy, Massachusetts / USA
